Switchback: Great Music Duo

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Switchback first recorded in 1994; the album was Ain’t Going Back. Fitzgerald toured with Clifton Chenier in the 80’s and took mandolin lessons from Jethro Burns.  He also plays guitar. McCormack won an award as a voice student at the American Conservatory of Chicago for his gorgeous tenor voice and he plays bass.  Both of them were in Terrence ‘Cuz’ Teahan’s group, which played Irish roots music. McCormack and Fitzgerald were some of the last musicians to benefit from Teahan’s genius. They have also played with Kansas, the Moody Blues, Tempest, Leon Russell, and Lloyd Maines.

Some of the other musicians that influenced their music are Stevie Ray Vaughan and Rodney Crowell and listening to such greats engendered an urge in them to create their own songs.

This duo brings so much musically to their songs: harmonies dripping with beauty, sensitive and strong instrumentals, and lyrics that draw pictures and scenes in the listener’s mind. Their newest album is Ghosts of the River Folk.

Switchback is involved in music education programs and songwriting workshops.

Don’t Ask: Great Original Melodic Folk/Rock Music

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Todd Christoffel says that he never knew if he sang very well or badly when he sang Christmas carols to his grandfather because his grandfather cried. But these days Todd and his group play melodic folk/rock. He and Cris Faget play guitar, Kevin Johnston on bass or Jim Fink, and Doug Aslin plays drums. Todd and Cris had formed String Theory in the beginning of the nineties and their ideas was to perform and record original music.

Doug joined in 1996 and the name of the group changed to Don’t Ask. He was one of the traveling musicians that occasionally played with Todd and Crispin. More recently, Todd’s wife, Jill, has gotten into the groove and is now singing and playing small hand percussion with the band. They play gigs in the Seattle area.

Todd been heavily influenced in his musical tastes and thinking by melodic artists like: The Beatles, Paul Simon, and Elton John. The group has two CD’s out: Nothing and There’s a Monkey In My Grape.

The Angels Cry (There’s A Monkey In My Grape) opened with strong acoustic guitar and then Chris on vocals, this melancholy song gave me chills. The cymbals added a rich dramatic effect. By the Light of a Distance Fire begins with a cricket sound and bongos… it is filled with good harmony and Chris’ clear voice…great drumming of which goes into a march beat at one point when the lyrics are talking about war.

Texas Barbecue blasts off with hard-hitting drums–great beat and bouncy…it has a fun feel with serious lyrics…some Willie Nelson like over the border guitar licks. Nice finger picking opening leading into smooth strumming and the bass sliding a note with the drums kicking in…good background vocals in Sailing on the Moment (Nothing). The Cold Stars Dance is a touching soft ballad. The song is based around poetic lyrics about suffering children and loving fathers.

The musicians on the CD’s are Todd Christoffel, Cris Faget, Doug Aslin, and Dan Mohler (bass). Kevin Johnston and other bassists are gig musicians. You can hear more of Don’t Ask at CD Baby and come over to http://deltachordsmusicnetwork.ning.com/ and join. Then you can get acquainted with Chris Christoffel and meet other musicians.

Song Surgeon Slowing Down Tempo Helps Musicians

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

The idea to create software that musicians and vocalists could use to slow down songs that they upload came from a component of the music lessons that many customers had really enjoyed. These customers contacted Todd, Michael, and James to say how much this helped them learn to play guitar. So the guys decided to create new software that utilized this slowed down feature and enabled musicians to upload any song and listen to the slower version, which they control how slow it plays.

This gave birth to Song Surgeon. Vocalist can change the pitch and tempo of the song; a guitarist can us the slowed and looped features, as can other musicians. It can be used to transcribe music. Song Surgeon has a file conversion utility, tempo changer, pitch changer, and loop editor. It has a music file conversion and can slow MP3’s.

Rockin’ First Lady of France

Spotlighted News: Rockin’ First Lady of France

The first lady of France, Carla Bruni-Sarkozangy, sang live on the BBC on the night of September 16, 2008. The other performers were the Kings of Leon and Metallica. The album she released in July 2008 soared to the head of the charts in France. The album’s title is As If Nothing Has Happened.

Formerly a model, she began her musical career in 1997 as a singer and songwriter. In 1999 Julien Cleric composed an album released in 2000 Si j’étais elle. This album contains seven compositions that use her lyrics. She released a debut Someone Told Me album in 2002 that was successful in French speaking countries. The movie Conversations with Other Women released in 2005 used three of her songs from her debut album. It was a Hans Canosa film.

She has also recorded the Serge Gainsbourg song Those Little Things. No Promises is her second album released in 2006. She records with Naïve, which is an independent company in France.

She was born Italian in 1967 on December 23rd. She married Nicolas Sarkozy, who is the president of France in February of 2008. She is now a naturalized citizen of France.

Drulz: Music for Our Times

Monday, August 18th, 2008

The slogan at drulz.com is “expose your music.” Artists performing in different genres have taken that slogan seriously. It’s a great site to go to find new music; it offers a selection from Christian rap to country music. Music artists can come to drulz.com and upload their music and biography to expose themselves to the world. Music fans have the fun of listening to new, interesting music, blogging, and making friends. Members can also create stations, channels, add photos, bookmark favorites, and invite friends. There’s an image gallery to click through and listen to your favorite artist.

Musicians, performers, and bands can read informative articles regarding the music industry that will enlighten them concerning how-to promote their music; they can get advice about how-to not be a starving artist and much more. The music charts allows a member to check out the rating of the groups and performers.

The artist have a home page where they can have a menu containing: songs, store, forum, guest book, comments, contact, press kit, and share this page. They can upload videos and gig schedules. It gives them a good jumping point to get their music heard and their name out on the Internet and to the world at large.

But hey, let’s get on to the artist and play some music. Right now, I’m listening to Mycheal from his album Collections. It is labeled as jazz, which is cool, but it has some definite funk going on. It’s a movin’ and groovin’ instrumental. This song screams get on the floor and bust a groove. All of that and a sweet piano melody too.

Yvonne Cobbs Bey has a great gospel voice. She sounds like gospel refried…that traditional element of gospel exudes from her voice. The backup band and singers are right on the money—their vocals and music bring the listener into the gospel zone. All of this comes out in her album Stand Still.

Kenny Chesney performs a moving country ballad in the song Don’t Blink from his album Just Who I am. The lyrics tell a story that most people can relate to and it is a reminiscence with an old man telling his story to the younger guy and giving sound advice. It’s a perfect song for a country soul.

The thing is a member can listen to everything from club to soul to contemporary Christian..now that is a stretch. Drulz has it and members can expand their listening pleasure and scope or stay with their tried and true genres. After listening, the member can write a review or rate the song. Drulz let’s you do it all.

Listen to a variety of music by clicking on the different stations or on the songs on the different artist pages. It is a true online community for artists and fans. Fans can also subscribe to RSS feeds and hear their favorite music. In case the pronunciation of the site’s name is bugging you—it is d rules.

Contemporary Artists Playing Historical American Music

I heard some great songs on Acoustic Cafe on 92zew last Sunday and I thought I’d share the music, so to speak. The ones that were most interesting from a 50-song, 3-CD set called Song of America.

This project was the brainchild of Janet Reno, which surprised me, but hey, the music is good and the historical songs are done by contemporary artists. It is a wonderful thing that these artists were interested in this music.

In the words of Janet Reno:

“The historical detail of the songs fascinated me and I suggested that Ed Pettersen record a whole album of songs focusing on key periods in American history, in order to tell our story to young people who might find joy in learning history through music.”
