Led Zepplin and Bluegrass…Whoa!

Saturday, July 28th, 2007

Dear Readers,

It is great to be writing another post for you. A friend of mine, Lewis, gave me a CD entitled Pickin’ On Zepplin, A Tribute. Its zippy and well played. Who would have thought of this combination? It is part of a tribute series from the CMH label.

It may not be for some Led Zepplin fans, but I like Zepplin and I like bluegrass and I like this tribute.

To give you an idea of the calliber of one the artists playing on the CD, I’ll introduce Dennis Caplinger of Primal Twang. He plays banjo and is the music director.

He has toured with Eric Clapton, Vince Gill, Nickel Creek, Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen, Byron Berline, Dan Crary, Richard Greene, Chris Thile, Sean Watkins, John Reischmann, Ray Park, Jann Browne, Kevin Welch, Kelly Willis, Ray Price, Rita Coolidge, Buck Howdy, Tim Flannery, Eve Selis and The Academy of Country Music Awards Show Band (list borrowed from primaltwang.com). More about Caplinger later.

Enjoy.

Renaissance Dreaming: Menagerie

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

If you like Renaissance Festivals and Medieval Faires, quick and lively instrumentals… jigs and planxtys, you’ll enjoy the music of Menagerie…Jon and Lisa Butts. They celebrate weddings playing and singing lovely O’Carolan tunes. They also have a repertoire for pubs. Between them they play the hammered dulcimer, guitar, flute, mandolin, harp, and penny whistle.

The Butts started Menageie in 1993; they entertain at private parties, schools, bookstores, coffee shops, and restaurants besides the faires and festivals–in the eastern and southern part of the U.S.A.

I heard Menagerie at the Renaissance Festival in Mobile, AL. last year and had to get a CD (Menagerie, Playin’ Around) because they are good musicians and friendly people.

You can enjoy their music and other performers at Renaissance Festival Podcast–addy below.

George Skaroulis: Ambient, Mysterious, Creative

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

I went to the Greek Festival in Mobile, AL. last fall and met George Skaroulis; he has a very friendly and warm personality. His music is emotionally charged and ambient and his Greek heritage blends through, giving it a enchanting atmosphere. He spent twenty years in the restaurant business, then broke out and went into music as an independent artist.

He is originally from Clearwater, FL, but lives in Atlanta, GA. He tells the tale of his youthful experience with piano lessons to
Maria Tzanakakis:

“When I was five years old, I would love to sit next to my mother while she played the piano. I would accompany her with my own improvisations, says Skaroulis. Eventually his parents arranged for him to take piano lessons. However, after just five weeks, it proved to be boring so he quit. I did not like the structure of piano lessons, Skaroulis continues. I wanted the freedom to play the music the way I felt it.”

To pursue his musical career he moved to Atlanta and worked as a manager of a downtown restaurant. Late one evening, Bradlee Hedrick enquired about the lonely piano and Skaroulis explained tht the pianist had finished; he played his own compositions to the enjoyment of Hedrick, who is a recording artist and producer.

Hendrick helped him release his first album in 1996, named Homelands, using his own record label, Evzone music.

His soft piano melodies take you on a gently undulating musical ride. But with the release of Second Nature he gets more into electronic keyboard, and has violin, vocals, synthesizer sounds, and real nature recordings on the CD.

Skaroulis’s emotionally laden music has enriched two PBS shows: Visions of Italy and Visions of Greece.

Other albums by this composer: Homeland, Numinous, Season Traditions, Generations, Second Nature, Athena, Forever Young and Sanctuary.

While at the Greek Festival, I bought Return To Homeland, which evokes the Mediterranean feeling and it will transport you into another culture.
