Some rock love songs are sad and full of angst, but others are happy. Being a Beatles fan I’d have to name some of their songs like And I Love Her, Love, Love Me Do, Something, I Feel Fine, and Eight Days A Week.
These are some more great upbeat love songs: How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) by James Taylor, Layla by Derick and the Dominoes, Chapel of Love by the Dixie Cups, though that’s getting into the Soul genre. Ponyno has several upbeat rock love songs to their credit like Stone Cold Love. Another good one is I Got You Babe by Sonny and Cher. Sweet Delilah by the Sea Dragons is a good love song.
Rod Stewart sings some upbeat love tunes on his CD As Time Goes By: The Great American Songbook Volume II. He gets into the songs of the crooners and does a fantastic job. Some of those wonderful love songs are Our Love is Here to Stay, I Only Have Eyes For You, and As Time Goes By. Queen Latifah helps with this duet. They aren’t rock songs, but they are sung by a rocker.
Until next time, think about your favorite love songs. Are they upbeat?

Bettye Lavette is still a high energy singer with great stage presence. She has showcased her tremendous versatility throughout her career by singing everything from jazz, blues, gospel, pop, rhythm and blues to folk. The way she sings these various genres tends to make a wonderful, soulful melting pot of the sounds.
Lavette puts so much emotion into her music, the embodiment of emotion includes musing, heartbroken, sassy, laid bare, happy…you name it, she covers it. Her latest achievement is an interpretive album entitled Interpretations-The British Rock Songbook is coming out on 05/25/10.

Sting helped to stop a huge dam from being built on the Xingu River in the Amazon around twenty years ago and is in opposition to this project again. According to environmentalists and locals this would destroy nature and the food supply for people living along the river. Opponents say that the energy from the dam would help mining companies more than anyone else.
According to the BBC, Sting, Chief Raoni, and other critics say it would flood big parts of the rain forest and have bad consequences on the fish population that the indigenous people depend on.
Sting formed a new wave band in 1977 along with Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani. From 1978 to 1983 they created five albums that went to platinum in the United States and in the United Kingdom. They also grabbed six grammy awards.

Switchback first recorded in 1994; the album was Ain’t Going Back. Fitzgerald toured with Clifton Chenier in the 80’s and took mandolin lessons from Jethro Burns. He also plays guitar. McCormack won an award as a voice student at the American Conservatory of Chicago for his gorgeous tenor voice and he plays bass. Both of them were in Terrence ‘Cuz’ Teahan’s group, which played Irish roots music. McCormack and Fitzgerald were some of the last musicians to benefit from Teahan’s genius. They have also played with Kansas, the Moody Blues, Tempest, Leon Russell, and Lloyd Maines.
Some of the other musicians that influenced their music are Stevie Ray Vaughan and Rodney Crowell and listening to such greats engendered an urge in them to create their own songs.
This duo brings so much musically to their songs: harmonies dripping with beauty, sensitive and strong instrumentals, and lyrics that draw pictures and scenes in the listener’s mind. Their newest album is Ghosts of the River Folk.
Switchback is involved in music education programs and songwriting workshops.

Yuwie is a social networking site that is almost two years old; it set sail on the Internet in May of 2007. Some people view it as a scam, but they pay members ad revenue for page views. You also get paid for referrals and your referrals (referrals) going to 10 levels deep in your social network. It is this pyramid format that makes people think it is a scam. There are 866,874 members; 13,690 joined this month and today is April 29,2009. So far today 269 people joined Yuwie. The Yuwie concept may seem repugnant to some people. But there are many people trying to find ways to make money online and using social networking as a method of soft advertising.
Some Definitions of Scam—Dictionary.com
- A confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, esp. for making a quick profit; swindle.
- To cheat or defraud with a scam.
Yuwie and Social Networking
Joining is free. Though Yuwie is making a steady profit from their ad revenue, the members make money too as their social network grows. So how is this a scam? The more page views you get the more money you make. When you look at other member’s profiles, blogs, and pictures you get some of the revenue. When you change your profile or make posts those count for page views. Are you going to get rich doing this? No. Can you make some money? Yes. The more you use social networking, ads, article writing, and other advertising methods the more traffic that visits your site or joins Yuwie and your revenue goes up.
Yuwie totals your earnings each month, though the payment design is Net60…meaning you get paid every 60 days. They have a minimum payout of $25.00. The revenue sharing rate is different each month. It depends on the amount of money received by Yuwie from ads. A member’s earnings at Yuwie are forfeited if they don’t sign in for over 180 days. A member gets 10% for the fist 3 levels, 4% for level 3-7, 10% for levels 8-9, and 30% at level 10. Thus, a member gets 10% or $5 of the current revenue sharing rate.
You get a blog, ability to upload videos and pictures, RSS and news feeds. People get to do fun things while utilizing social networking. You can also download the Yuwie toolbar and listen to Yuwie radio. This is a place for social networking and making money. Social networking is a popular way to meet people and promote products and services. It isn’t a secret that while having fun, people utilize social networking as a method of promotion. Social networking isn’t a new concept in the business world. When you join Yuwie your social networking has a bonus built in.

After Mayo Williams rescued Josh from the ill treatment of Taggert, he had two more years of recording experience in Chicago. After this, he had the funds to go home to Greenville, South Carolina to care for his mother and siblings.
What would become Columbia Records, then ARC Records in the latter part of 1930 sent two talent scouts hunting for Josh White. ARC wanted to signup the young man that as a boy had been an excellent sessions guitarist, and more importantly had guided the main blind street singers of an era across the U.S.A. He had memorized their collection of Negro music—a grass roots repertoire of spirituals, folk songs, and blues.
The talent scouts probed the country for months and located him at home with his mother and siblings. Josh was still underage and his mother only agreed to sign the contract with the stipulation he didn’t record the blues, but only spirituals. The contract for $100.00 gave ARC the rights to all of the religious music he had learned. When he turned eighteen he signed a contract to record the blues. He used the name Pinewood Tom for these recordings. As 1933 round around he had become a huge success.
A week after he recorded “When the Sun Goes down” in 1936 he was involved in a bar brawl and slammed his fist through a glass door. He developed gangrene in his picking hand and though advised to amputate he wouldn’t, but his hand was useless. He couldn’t move his fingers at all.
Josh didn’t want to sing without playing guitar. He stopped his recording career and starting working mundane jobs: elevator operator, dockworker, and building superintendent. Still, from 1928-1936 he had a phenomenal recording output of race records, which was the legitimate name of these recordings as defined by the black community. During this era he had recorded as a session guitarist with Buddy Moss, The Carver Boys, Lucille Bogan and others.
To be continued…

Josh White was a protest songwriter before it became more popularized in the sixties. He portrayed a style more along the lines of a workingman’s protester of skinflint businesses. He is like Woody Guthrie in being a workingman’s voice, but playing a country blues and gospel oriented style. His music branched out into other realms like jazz, cabaret, folk, and Tin Pan Alley.
White’s recordings were prolific on labels like Vocalion Records and Emerson Records, which were black record labels doing business in the 1920’s and 30’s. In the McCarthy era White ended up on a list of people believed to be communists because of his protest songs. Many of his songs were anti-segregationists and concerning human rights.
Josh White had a definite influence on future generations of musicians and singers like Eartha Kitt, Bob Dylan, Odetta, Mike Bloomfield, Merle Travis, Pete Seeger, Richie Havens and numerous others. The unique voicings and styling of his guitar playing has captured the imagination of many guitarists.
Josh White came from a Christian home; he was the son of Reverend Dennis White and Daisy White. They lived in Greenville, North Carolina. He was born in 1914. His parents named him after an important figure in the Bible named Joshua. After his father suffered injustices and was put into a mental institution and then died in 1930…young Josh White felt the grave responsibility of stepping into his father’s shoes.
After his father had been deceased for two months, he started roaming the southern musical circuit with Blind Man Arnold a street performer. Josh soon became adept at singing, dancing, playing the tambourine, and then the guitar.
He collected the money for Arnold who sent Joshua’s mother a sum of $2.00 per week and there were four children at home. He worked with Arnold for eight years; during that time Arnold farmed Josh out to sixty-six different performers who were blind. Two of these artists were Blind Lemon Jefferson and Blind Joe Taggart. Josh and the blind artists walked wherever they went such as Chicago, Dallas, and Miami.
While working in Chicago in 1927, his genius as a guitarist caught the attention of Mayo Williams of Paramount Records. Williams gave him a job as a session’s guitarist. But Taggart and Arnold held him under their thumbs until Williams forced them to free him in 1928 by saying he would report them to the cops for mistreating Josh. They still had him sleeping in a horse stable and not allowed to wear long pants or shoes in the cold. Williams made Arnold buy Josh shoes and a suit and he moved Josh into a hotel. He also had to start paying Josh for his recordings. Josh had already had a hit with Taggart called “Scandalous and Ashamed.”

Todd Christoffel says that he never knew if he sang very well or badly when he sang Christmas carols to his grandfather because his grandfather cried. But these days Todd and his group play melodic folk/rock. He and Cris Faget play guitar, Kevin Johnston on bass or Jim Fink, and Doug Aslin plays drums. Todd and Cris had formed String Theory in the beginning of the nineties and their ideas was to perform and record original music.
Doug joined in 1996 and the name of the group changed to Don’t Ask. He was one of the traveling musicians that occasionally played with Todd and Crispin. More recently, Todd’s wife, Jill, has gotten into the groove and is now singing and playing small hand percussion with the band. They play gigs in the Seattle area.
Todd been heavily influenced in his musical tastes and thinking by melodic artists like: The Beatles, Paul Simon, and Elton John. The group has two CD’s out: Nothing and There’s a Monkey In My Grape.
The Angels Cry (There’s A Monkey In My Grape) opened with strong acoustic guitar and then Chris on vocals, this melancholy song gave me chills. The cymbals added a rich dramatic effect. By the Light of a Distance Fire begins with a cricket sound and bongos… it is filled with good harmony and Chris’ clear voice…great drumming of which goes into a march beat at one point when the lyrics are talking about war.
Texas Barbecue blasts off with hard-hitting drums–great beat and bouncy…it has a fun feel with serious lyrics…some Willie Nelson like over the border guitar licks. Nice finger picking opening leading into smooth strumming and the bass sliding a note with the drums kicking in…good background vocals in Sailing on the Moment (Nothing). The Cold Stars Dance is a touching soft ballad. The song is based around poetic lyrics about suffering children and loving fathers.
The musicians on the CD’s are Todd Christoffel, Cris Faget, Doug Aslin, and Dan Mohler (bass). Kevin Johnston and other bassists are gig musicians. You can hear more of Don’t Ask at CD Baby and come over to http://deltachordsmusicnetwork.ning.com/ and join. Then you can get acquainted with Chris Christoffel and meet other musicians.

The idea to create software that musicians and vocalists could use to slow down songs that they upload came from a component of the music lessons that many customers had really enjoyed. These customers contacted Todd, Michael, and James to say how much this helped them learn to play guitar. So the guys decided to create new software that utilized this slowed down feature and enabled musicians to upload any song and listen to the slower version, which they control how slow it plays.
This gave birth to Song Surgeon. Vocalist can change the pitch and tempo of the song; a guitarist can us the slowed and looped features, as can other musicians. It can be used to transcribe music. Song Surgeon has a file conversion utility, tempo changer, pitch changer, and loop editor. It has a music file conversion and can slow MP3’s.

Previously, I had written a few posts about the Merseybeat and promised more so here it is. It sprang from Liverpool, England—a musical sound of the early sixties that mixed skiffle, rock n’ roll, and rhythm and blues together. This style changed popular music forever and even the alternative sounds of today wouldn’t be what they are without it. Albeit, there have been other innovations since then that have contributed to today’s sounds. Still, the Merseybeat overwhelmingly affected popular music and continues to influence it today.
Bob Wooler had a lot to do with the Mersey sound spreading around and getting out to the rest of the world. Wooler was the DJ at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. He announced and introduced all of the live bands at the club and played records between acts. The place where he purchased his records was N.E.M.S., which stands for North End Music Stores. Brian Epstein owned N.E.M.S.; he became the manager of The Beatles.
The music scene in Liverpool exploded during the years of 1958 to 1964. More than four hundred groups played at the clubs and dance halls during the early sixties. Two of the bands that of the Merseybeat that became famous are Gerry and the Pacemakers and The Searchers.
There was a publication (Mersey Beat) that also contributed to the publicizing of the Merseybeat sound and about other musicians that came to Liverpool. Bill Harry started the paper; he was a friend of John Lennon; they both went to Liverpool Art College. Brian Epstein wrote for the paper about new records that he offered at his music store.
